Went out early to find a taxi to take me to the Yungang Grottoes. It was rush hour so I had to walk around for awhile until I found one who was available. We negotiated 50 CNY for a one way trip. It took about 30 minutes to get there.
The whole area was very scenic and full of temples. The caves and grottoes with the huge Buddhas were impressive and better than expected. I took tons of photos. There were plenty of people but it wasn't packed so there were no lines and I got to takes pictures without people in the way.
Spent a few hours there and then took the bus back to Datong. I wasn't sure where to get off but the bus was getting farther away from the hotel so I got out near the old city walls. I walked through the old town, had an expensive coffee at a place, and then took the long walk back to the hostel.
Took it easy the rest of the day because my legs were wobbly. Had dinner at Mr. Lee's right in front of the building. Then booked the train and hotel for Pingyao on Thursday. I was going to take the night train but the sleepers were all sold out. I was the only one at the hostel that night!
