Sunday, Morning Safari in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Sunday, September 22, 2019
This was our final day in Amboseli National Park. We got up early at 06:00 to have breakfast, take a morning safari drive, and then go back to Nairobi. The Spanish couples were late getting ready so we left about 20 minutes late. The Canadian guy was anxious to get to the park while it was still clear enough to see Kilimanjaro and take some pictures with animals in front of it. Kilimanjaro is usually only visible in the early morning before it gets too hazy. We rushed into the park and got some photos of elephants with Kilimanjaro in the background but they weren't close enough to make great shots.

Later we came across a group of hyenas and watched them frolic around and fight over a wildebeest skull and horns. That was the best view of hyenas that I had seen. We also saw some nice flamingos with their reflections in the still lake water. There were also some wildebeest in the lake which looked very nice.

We crossed the entire national park and exited on the Namanga side which is the border to Tanzania. Half of our group was going on to Tanzania and Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar so we dropped them off and said our goodbyes. There were three of us left in our van so we had plenty of space for the long drive back to Nairobi.

In Nairobi, we dropped the Spanish couple off at the airport and then I got dropped off at the Kepler Hotel near the airport since I would be flying to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia the next day. The area around my hotel was definitely not a tourist area but there was a supermarket on the street level of the hotel so I had plenty of food.

The Amboseli National Park safari was as good as the Maasai Mara safari. We saw hundreds elephants, many with very long tusks. The only thing missing was lions.
