Today we had an optional early morning walk around the campsite guided by the local Maasai. We got up at 06:00 for coffee and then started walking at 06:30. We had a nice clear view of Mount Kilimanjaro. We walked toward some giraffes but they didn't let us get too close. We saw a large mongoose family in the distance exploring a big termite mound. There were lots of colorful birds around.
After the walking tour, we had breakfast at the camp and then headed out for an all day safari at Amboseli National Park. We saw many, many elephants, some of them very close to our safari van. There is a big swampy area in the park and the elephants were slogging around in it. There were also all kinds of water birds and many hippo.
There were giraffes near the entrance but not deeper inside the park because there are no trees inside. There were many wildebeest (gnu) that were gray and bigger than the migrating wildebeest of the Maasai Mara. We also saw lots of ostriches in groups and a few large baboon families. There was one fat, lone hyena.
We had lunch at Observation Hill, the only high spot in the park. It had nice views of the swamp and the elephant herds passing by. There were a lot of colorful birds around the lunch area trying to scavenge our food scraps.
After lunch it was more of the same and we headed back to the campsite at about 17:00. We walked outside of the camp fence to watch the spectacular African sunset through the trees.
