Monday, Inverness to Portree, Isle of Skye, by Bus

Inverness, Scotland

I took the first bus from Inverness to Portree on the Isle of Skye. I checked out of the superb Sandy's B&B which had upgraded me from a single to a triple room with a seating area for five days. I hate to leave all of this space.

I walked with my rolly suitcase for about 15 minutes from the B&B across the Ness River pedestrian bridge and then through the center of Inverness to the bus station.

I really had a good time in Inverness especially hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding countryside and down to Loch Ness.

The 3.5 hour bus ride went by really fast. There was nice scenery when we got close to the coast and then it got even better when we crossed the short bridge over to the Isle of Skye. We got to Portree at 12:05 and I had a coffee because check-in time at the hotel I booked wasn't until 16:00.

I went to the hotel at about 13:00. It was a 500 meter walk outside of town on the road that the bus came in on. It was a self-catering hotel which means that you check yourself in. They left each arriving guest a letter with instructions including the room number to go to. My room was ready so I dropped my rolly suitcase off and walked back to the town to look around.

I found a nice hiking trail that went around the coast and then looped back to the town. It was extremely scenic with views of the next island over, boats in the ocean, and sheep in the pastures along the ocean and up the hills. I could even see part of the Old Man of Storr off in the distance about 8 miles away.
