After a late breakfast at the Haile Resort Gondar, I walked to the city center which was about a kilometer away. I had a buno (traditional coffee) in an open air cafe right on the Piazza roundabout.
There were groups of guys dressed in white and wearing white turbans going around dancing and singing for donations. This is part of the Mezkel Festival which happens tomorrow.
One of the groups came into the cafe and really went nuts when I started taking pictures and recording. Even the waitresses joined in with the enthusiastic singing, dancing, squealing, and drumming. They let me hit drum a few times too.
After the festivities, I walked over to the Fasil Ghebbi Unesco World Heritage site. The Royal Enclosure is the remains of a fortress-city that was founded in the 17th century by Emperor Fasilides and was the home of Ethiopia's emperors.
I couldn't find the entrance so I went in the exit to look for it and I was quickly ushered out and told to walk all the way around to the other side. I eventually got in and took a nice walk around the large grounds.
After Fasil Ghebbi, I went to look for the hotel that I would be moving to tomorrow since the Haile Resort is full for tomorrow night. On the way, I found a tour office and went in to find out about trekking tours in the Simien Mountains. I quickly reached an agreement with the tour agent for a 3 day / 2 night trip for 5000 birr. I'll be joining a tour in two days, on Sunday after the big Mezkel Festival on Saturday.
