Friday, First Day in Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon, Myanmar

The bus arrived earlier than expected at about 05:00. I could have slept comfortably for a few more hours. The driver made a bathroom stop about 15 minutes before we got to the station so we were all confused about where we were.

I waited in the bus station until sunrise a little after 06:00 and took a taxi to downtown Yangon. The guy wanted the money up front because he had stopped at a gas station and filled up and he didn't have any money on him. I refused for awhile and he got pretty excited and was showing me his empty wallet and waving it around frantically. We had to pull away from the pumps while the gas station lady stood there waiting for her money. I gave her enough to pay the bill but not all of my fare. I held some back to make sure he didn't throw me out somewhere before we got to the hotel.

Luckily the hotel had a room ready at 07:30 so I didn't have to do the tired zombie walk around the city until the 14:00 check-in time. I snoozed for a few hours and then walked to KFC for lunch and then over to the huge Shwedagon Pagoda. The massive stupa is surrounded by many temples and and hundreds of Buddhas and many other figures. There were a lot of tourist monks around taking selfie. I walked around it a few times to get my steps in and then took the bus back to my neighborhood.
