In the morning we took the bus to the train station and then the tram to the airport to pick up a rental car. We drove from Florence to the Val d'Orcia area of Tuscany. We took the back roads as much as possible so we could stop for photos.
The views of Tuscany are magnificent with fields of different colors, isolated chateaus and farmhouses, and many hills topped with either small Romanesque villages or remains of castles and towers.
We stopped for lunch in San Quirico d’Orcia and then walked through the medieval streets of the small ancient village. From there we drove to Pienza and Monticchielo which had the best scenery.
Next we went to Rocca d'Orcia which was built on the side of a mountain with epic views of the
surrounding countryside and then on to Castiglione d'Orcia which was nice but not as spectacular as the other villages.
We finished the loop near San Quirico d'Orcia in the village of Montalcino where we spent the night. Montalcino is a little livelier with more tourists than the other villages and also has nice views, small medieval streets, and the Montalcino Fortress.
